College baseball rankings: 2023 Top 25 poll
While college baseball’s top five teams held strong over the weekend, the rest of the top 25 was a bit shaky. With thrilling upsets and exciting comebacks across the board, it’s been quite the season so far.
LSU doesn’t seem like it’ll let go of that top spot anytime soon, but anywhere you look in the SEC, there is solid baseball being played. Wake Forest is leading the ACC pack. And as far as the Pac-12 and Big 12 are concerned, it might just be anyone’s game, though Stanford is leading the way out West.
Key game last week: West Virginia 9, Oklahoma State 5. West Virginia won the series against Oklahoma State on the road in Stillwater. It was a solid series win for the Mountaineers (they lost the third game of the weekend); however, the Cowboys now find themselves out of the top 25 with back-to-back series losses. They host Oklahoma on Tuesday before a series with Kansas, so it’ll be interesting to see if they can turn things around, as they hold an 8-7 record in Big 12 play.
Key game to watch: Florida at South Carolina on Thursday (7:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU). A top-10 battle between a couple of SEC heavy hitters, there’s not really much more you could ask for. Florida is 11-4 in conference play and is coming off a couple of wins over Georgia. South Carolina isn’t too far off with an 10-4 conference record, but the Gamecocks did just drop its past two games to Vanderbilt. Ethan Petry set the freshman home run record (18) for South Carolina in that loss, so it’s safe to say whether it’s South Carolina wanting to get back on track or Florida wanting to keep its momentum going, it’ll be a fun series.
Key player to watch: Jac Caglianone, Florida. The two-way star is a must-see whether he is pitching or hitting. So far this season, he has hit 21 home runs with 54 RBIs, and in the Gators’ most recent game against Georgia, he had two homers and seven RBIs. He’s playing some of his best baseball right now, so let’s see what he can do against the Gamecocks.
Play of the week: Josh McAlister laid everything out there for this wild catch as Ohio State beat Bowling Green 8-2.
