$49.5 Billion in U.S. Treasury? For These Billionaires, That’s Nothing

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 6 Second

The Treasury Department’s cash balance fell to just under $49.5 billion on Wednesday, as the United States inched toward running out of cash to pay its bills.

That was significantly lower than the $316 billion the department had in operating cash, which is held at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, at the start of the month.

Just how empty is the Treasury cash coffer? For comparison, $49.5 billion is on par with the gross domestic product of Azerbaijan and Tunisia and lower than the net worth of the two dozen wealthiest people in the world. Of course, much of the assets of those billionaires are tied up in stocks, rather than liquid assets.

Here is a list of people with higher net worths than the U.S. cash reserves, according to Bloomberg News’s Billionaire Index as of Thursday. (Under the news agency’s editorial policy, its billionaire owner, Michael Bloomberg, is not considered for the index. Forbes, though, estimates his net worth at $94.5 billion.)

  • Bernard Arnault, chief executive of the luxury group LVMH: $189 billion

  • Elon Musk, chief executive of SpaceX, Tesla and Twitter: $179 billion

  • Jeff Bezos, founder and chief executive of Amazon: $139 billion

  • Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft: $125 billion

  • Larry Ellison, co-founder and executive chairman of Oracle: $116 billion

  • Steve Ballmer, investor and former chief executive of Microsoft: $113 billion

  • Larry Page, co-founder of Google: $112 billion

  • Warren Buffett, investor: $111 billion

  • Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google: $106 billion

  • Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder and chief executive of Facebook: $92.3 billion

  • Carlos Slim, investor: $90.3 billion

  • Françoise Bettencourt Meyers, heir to the L’Oréal fortune and company board member: $87.2 billion

  • Mukesh Ambani, chairman of the energy group Reliance Industries: $83.7 billion

  • Amancio Ortega, founder of the Inditex fashion group: $67.1 billion

  • Jim Walton, heir to the Wal-Mart fortune: $66.6 billion

  • Rob Walton, heir to the Wal-Mart fortune: $64.9 billion

  • Alice Walton, heir to the Wal-Mart fortune: $63.8 billion

  • Gautam Adani, founder and chairman of the Adani Group conglomerate: $63.4 billion

  • Jacqueline Mars, heir to and co-owner of the candy maker Mars: $61.7 billion

  • John Mars, heir to and chairman of Mars: $61.7 billion

  • Zhong Shanshan, founder and chairman of the bottled-water company Nongfu Spring: $61.6 billion

  • Julia Flesher Koch and family, heirs of the businessman David Koch: $60.6 billion

  • Charles Koch, chief executive of the industrial conglomerate Koch Industries: $60.4 billion

  • Michael Dell, chief executive and chairman of Dell Technologies: $53.4 billion

High Court Slams Cops’ “Week-Kneed Approach” Over Unhealthy Religious Acts

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 42 Second

True religious practice should be guided by reason, said the Kerala High Court

Kochi:

The contention that animal sacrifice is an essential and integral part of one’s religious belief and cannot be interfered with even if it causes nuisance to others, has to be rejected, the Kerala High Court has said.

Hearing a writ petition against the inaction of the authorities to stop the illegal slaughter of birds and animals in the guise of ritualistic sacrifice at a private residence in Kochi, Justice V Arun said such unhealthy, unscientific and deleterious practices are to be prevented, even if it is done in the name of religion.

The court, in an order issued on May 24, directed the Ernakulam district panchayat, the revenue divisional officer, Ernakulam Rural SP and other officials to stop the activities carried out in a structure, resembling a temple, constructed by a private person on the second floor of his residential building, after conducting a probe, at Edathala Grama panchayat near Aluva in Kohi.

“Going by the precedents and on a proper understanding of the rights under Article 25 and the liberty guaranteed under Article 21, the contention that, animal sacrifice being an essential and integral part of the 8th respondent’s religious belief and practice, cannot be interfered with even if it causes nuisance to others, has to be rejected,” the court said.

As opined by none other than Dr BR Ambedkar, true religious practice should be guided by reason, equality and humanistic values, rather than blind adherence to traditions, the court added.

“All unhealthy, unscientific and deleterious practices are to be prevented, even if it is done in the name of religion,” the order said.

The court observed that it was disconcerting to note the “weak-kneed and jittery approach of the police and revenue authorities” when illegalities committed under the garb of religion are brought to their notice.

“The authorities should be mindful of the fact that the laws of this country are equally applicable to all citizens and no special treatment can be meted out to any person on religious grounds,” the court observed.

The writ petition said that objectionable activities are carried out in a structure, resembling a temple, constructed by Anand P on the second floor of his residential building and has exhibited a board with the name ‘Sree Bhramarambika Vishnumayaswami Devasthanam’ and is canvassing devotees through notices and other modes of advertisement.

The petition also said that Anand was conducting poojas and rituals in his building day-in and day-out, accompanied by the ringing of bells, blowing of the conch and shrieks and cries of animals and birds.

“The blood of the slaughtered animals is flown to the road and carcasses are strewn all over the place. Additionally, vehicles of persons visiting the place for conducting poojas and rituals are parked indiscriminately. All these factors have made life impossible for me (petitioner) and the other residents of the area,” the petitioner claimed.

It also said that the construction was illegal and it was done without obtaining the permission envisaged under the Kerala Panchayat Building Rules.

What to know as Celine Dion cancels tour after stiff-person syndrome diagnosis

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 17 Second

Celine Dion has canceled the remaining dates of her Courage world tour while she receives treatment for the rare neurological disorder stiff-person syndrome.

“I’m so sorry to disappoint all of you once again. I’m working really hard to build back my strength, but touring can be very difficult even when you’re 100%,” the Canadian singer wrote in an announcement on Instagram.

Dion announced in December that she was diagnosed with an incurable neurological condition that causes muscle stiffness and spasms. The medical disorder has made it harder for her to walk and sing, she said at the time.

The rest of her European tour, which was going to include 42 performances in cities such as Amsterdam, Paris, London and Berlin, was scheduled to resume this August until April 2024. Dion previously performed 52 concerts before pausing the tour in March 2020 due to the pandemic.

“We do have every hope that someday soon, Celine will be able to come to all these cities in Europe to perform for her amazing fans, but that time simply is not now,” a news release Dion posted said.

Stiff-person syndrome experts say symptoms don’t usually affect a person’s life span and can be managed through treatment, but the disorder, believed to be autoimmune, can be painful. In some cases, it can affect the muscles used for speech and singing.

The Grammy-winning megastar, best known for “My Heart Will Go On” and other ’90s hits, was most recently involved in filming and recording new songs for “Love Again,” a rom-com starring Priyanka Chopra and Sam Heughan.

Dion ended her message to fans: “It’s not fair to you to keep postponing the shows, and even though it breaks my heart, it’s best that we cancel everything now until I’m really ready to be back on stage again. I want you all to know, I’m not giving up… and I can’t wait to see you again!”

What is stiff-person syndrome? Celine Dion reveals rare condition.

What is stiff-person syndrome?

Stiff-person syndrome (SPS) is a rare, chronic neurological disorder that causes muscle stiffness and sometimes intense muscle spasms in the trunk and limbs, affecting posture, balance and the ability to use certain muscles. It usually has an autoimmune component and, in some cases, it can be progressive and painful, experts say.

Andrew McKeon, professor of neurology at the Mayo Clinic, said SPS affects nerves in the spinal cord and neurons in the brain that regulate movement. In other words, when the nervous system becomes overly excited, it can send too many signals to the muscles, causing them to stiffen or spasm.

A person’s “whole body can seize up when startled or in other situations,” putting them at risk for falls and injuries, he said.

The syndrome affects women at twice the rate of men, experts say, and although it can affect a person at any age, it is most often diagnosed among middle-aged people.

What are the symptoms of stiff-person syndrome?

SPS causes muscle stiffness, muscle aches and muscle spasms, often in the lower back and legs, which can make it difficult for some patients to walk. Those who have symptoms that are not well-controlled may need to use a walker or wheelchair to keep from falling or injuring themselves.

The muscle spasms are what neurologists call “stimulus sensitive” and can be provoked by a sudden noise, light touch or even emotional distress. One form of the condition can affect muscles that control the eyes, speech or singing or swallowing.

“Just imagine having the worst Charley Horse you can have but it’s affecting a ton of muscles in your lower back and legs — and it’s constant. It’s very painful,” said Kunal Desai, assistant professor of neurology at Yale University.

Chi-Ying “Roy” Lin, a neurology professor specializing in movement disorders at Baylor College of Medicine, said in the cases he has seen, patients “were very, extremely uncomfortable, and it’s usually very painful.”

“And when the pain occurs it’s very debilitating no matter what position, he added. “There’s basically no comfortable position for them to stay, either sitting or laying.”

The condition typically only affects skeletal muscles that we can control, and not smooth muscles or those found in the heart. It does not seem to affect cognition, but may be associated with anxiety.

What is the life expectancy for someone with stiff-person syndrome?

Although SPS is rare and not completely understood, experts say the syndrome does not typically have an effect on longevity, except in very rare circumstances in which muscles used for breathing or swallowing are compromised.

When symptoms are well-controlled, patients can live a relatively normal life. However, when the symptoms are not able to be managed, they can suffer significant impairments, experts say.

Lin said the main effect is on quality of life. “I don’t think for the cases I saw, their life quality ever comes back to like normal baseline,” Lin said.

Read Time:1 Minute, 10 Second

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez made their relationship public in 2019

Lauren Sánchez has seemingly confirmed her engagement to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in her recent Instagram story post.

The Emmy-winning journalist and helicopter pilot shared a picture of herself in a white dress embroidered with pearls and captioned it “Cannes 2023. That was fun”, referring to their time in Cannes, France, where Bezos reportedly proposed.

The couple has been vacationing on Bezos’ superyacht, Koru, in the South of France, and has been all smiles since their engagement.

A source told PEOPLE, “They have been in a great mood and are obviously enjoying their trip. When they first arrived in Spain, Lauren especially seemed giddy with excitement as they toured the yacht.”

The source also highlighted that the couple “are usually hand-in-hand,” and “look very happy,” and mentioned, “Her engagement ring is beyond stunning. And huge! She keeps playing with it and looking at it. You can tell she loves it.”

Bezos and Sánchez went public with their relationship in 2019, after both had announced their respective divorces. They have since been advocating for climate change and launched the Bezos Earth Fund.

The couple has continued to grow together, and Sánchez has been by Bezos’ side in his conservation and space exploration efforts since he stepped down as CEO of Amazon in February 2021.

Sussex coach provides update on Shadab Khan after nasty collision on field

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 14 Second

Pakistan all-rounder, Shadab Khan, who made his Sussex debut against Somerset on Friday, was involved in a nasty collision with his teammate, Nathan McAndrew, while attempting to take a catch. The collision occurred on the fourth ball of the seventh over when Tom Kohler-Cadmore top-edged a delivery over extra cover.

As Shadab ran backward to secure the catch, he collided with Nathan McAndrew, who was also sprinting from long off to make the catch. Both fielders went down on the ground and required immediate medical attention. The game was temporarily halted for approximately 10 minutes to ensure their well-being.

BREAKING NEWS: Horrible collision between Shadab Khan & Nathan McAndrew. The game was halted for 10 minutes during which Nathan was able to rejoin the team but Shadab Khan walked back to the dug-out and will be having his concussion tests done.#VitalityBlast pic.twitter.com/l27zPzwPod

— Israr Ahmed Hashmi (@IamIsrarHashmi) May 26, 2023

Although the catch was dropped, the primary concern was the health and safety of the players.

Following the collision, Nathan McAndrew was able to take the field after receiving medical attention. However, as a precautionary measure, Shadab Khan did not return to the field and remained in the dug-out for the rest of the match.

Sussex head coach, Paul Farbrace, provided an update on Shadab’s condition, stating, “Shadab is alright. He has a bit of a sore neck. The doctor felt that it was best to take him out of the game, nervous of obviously concussion. They both are alright, that’s the most important thing. It could have been a lot worse. They are both okay and there are no nasty injuries, so that’s a good sign.”

— Sussex Cricket (@SussexCCC) May 26, 2023

Prior to the incident, Shadab had made a modest contribution with the bat, scoring 9 runs off 8 balls, including a six. Unfortunately, he did not get an opportunity to showcase his bowling skills due to the collision. As a result, Somerset comfortably chased the target of 184, securing victory with five wickets in hand.

While the match didn’t end as desired for Sussex, the positive news is that both Shadab and McAndrew avoided serious injuries.

Doja Cat dishes out details about changing title of her new album

Doja Cat has recently dished out details about changing title of her new music album.

Doja admitted that the album title interchanging is not “a trolling campaign or marketing scheme”.

“It’s because of indecisiveness and crowdsourcing,” said the musician.

Lately, the singer talked about her creative process in a roundtable interview at the Patrón El Cielo launch party in New York City, where she also performed a medley of her hit tracks.

Speaking to Insider on how she chooses an album title, Doja responded, “Good God. I don’t know.”

“I put my ADHD kind of on display — by accident, I guess,” continued the songstress.

She continued, “I thought that ‘Hellmouth’ was the name of the album, but then it wasn’t.”

“But I’m good at doing things last minute,” remarked the singer.

Doja explained, “I’ve been firing off random stuff and reading comments and seeing how people receive it and then, you know, saying ‘no’ a lot. ‘Just kidding’.”

In the end, she added, “I do think that I finally have a title, and it’s not ‘First of All’.”

New York, United States of America (USA)

On Thursday US President Joe Biden expressed confidence about the talks, saying there will be no default and that recent talks had been productive.U.S. President Joe Biden and top congressional Republican Kevin McCarthy appeared to be closing in on an agreement ahead of a June 1 deadline that would raise the government’s $31.4 trillion debt ceiling for two years.

Wall Street and European shares rose on Friday as the White House and congressional Republicans worked on the final touches on a U.S. debt ceiling deal.

Treasury yields rose as investors rethought how long interest rates were likely to keep rising. [US/]

The MSCI world equity index, which tracks shares in 49 nations, gained 1% by 10:38 a.m. EDT (1438 GMT), but was still on track for a weekly loss.

The index extended gains after U.S. data showed stronger-than-expected consumer spending in April.

U.S. President Joe Biden and top congressional Republican Kevin McCarthy appeared to be closing in on an agreement ahead of a June 1 deadline that would raise the government’s $31.4 trillion debt ceiling for two years while capping spending on most items.

The dollar eased against a basket of currencies, but stayed on track for a third straight weekly gain as markets bet on higher-for-longer interest rates. [FRX/]

Gold edged up from two-month lows, helped by the dip in the greenback, as oil prices rose.

Euro zone government bond yields headed for a weekly rise as robust economic data and hawkish remarks by central bank officials triggered some upward repricing in market bets on euro zone interest rates.

“This week has been a bit of a wake-up call to rate expectations. There is a realization that inflation is going to be stickier for a lot longer,” said Mike Hewson, chief markets strategist at CMC Markets.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 354.75 points, or 1.08%, to 33,119.74, the S&P 500 gained 47.46 points, or 1.12%, at 4,197.73 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 200.84 points, or 1.57%, at 12,897.35.

Strong U.S. consumer spending data boosted the economy’s prospects for the second quarter and inflation picked up, the Commerce Department said on Friday.

Europe’s STOXX 600 index of 600 companies rose 0.8%, while Europe’s broad FTSEurofirst 300 index added 1.20%.

Chipmaker Marvell Technology Inc surged nearly 28% after it forecast its annual artificial-intelligence (AI) revenue would double.

Shares of the world’s most valuable chipmaker, Nvidia Corp, added 1.81% after vaulting to a record high on Thursday following a bumper forecast.

The yield on benchmark 10-year Treasury notes rose to 3.8274% and the two-year yield, which rises with traders’ expectations of higher Fed fund rates, climbed to 4.5723%.

CHINA RECOVERY QUESTIONED

In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei rose 0.4% with revenue and production upgrades for Nvidia boosting Japanese firms with exposure. [.T]

The cost of insuring exposure to U.S. government debt dropped on Friday.

China’s yuan slid along with Chinese stocks as the shine comes off expectations of a booming post-pandemic recovery, sending steel prices in China to a three-year low.

“The U.S. debt issues are not the only ‘ceiling’ that we are dealing with, as a slowdown in Chinese economic data suggests that a ceiling for growth may be forming as well,” said RBC technical strategist George Davis.

U.S. crude climbed 1.04% to $72.62 a barrel. Brent crude rose to $76.88 per barrel.

Spot gold prices rose 0.15% to $1,943.19 an ounce.

Tom Hanks receives honorary doctorate from Harvard University

Read Time:1 Minute, 20 Second

Tom Hanks was honored with a doctorate at the 372nd graduation ceremony of Harvard University

On Thursday, iconic actor Tom Hanks was awarded an honorary Doctor of Arts degree by Harvard University, adding to his already long list of honors.

Introducing Hanks by some of his most iconic roles, Harvard University President Lawrence Bacow called Hanks, “Wilson’s bestie, Buzz’s buddy, Ryan’s savior, [and] America’s dad.”

Bacow sang praises of Hank’s wide range of roles, “with wit and grace, grit and gumption, his performances tap the heart and soul and show us why in Tom we trust.”

Hanks, 66, was amused when he was gifted a Wilson volleyball – a reference to his 2000 hit Cast Away.

During his 30-minute acceptance speech, Hanks touched on racism and said, “For what are we all, but human?”

Referring to himself as an “armchair historian who reads non-fiction for pleasure,” he talked about justice in America.

“If you live in the United States of America, the trust is sacred, unalterable, chiseled into the stone of the foundation of our republic,” he said.

“When it comes to our race, there are many models, but only one chassis. None of us are super, but we are the Americans, unique in our willingness to admit that when it comes to our race, we are all but human”.

Meanwhile, Hanks’s family has told PEOPLE that the delighted actor has asked them to call him a doctor. His son Truman says, “I’m calling him doctor — even if it’s only honorary”.

A Union That Felt Like ‘a Love Letter to Black Culture’

Read Time:1 Minute, 15 Second

“That first date consisted of music, food and exploration,” he said. “After that, every other date kind of followed that same formula.”

In June 2016, Mr. Thompson moved to New York. “He immediately was like, ‘What are we doing?’ And I was like, ‘We’re continuing a friendship,’” she said. That fall, he said he would start dating other people. “Tristan was definitely getting tired of me prolonging it, so he applied the pressure,” she said. And it worked.

On Dec. 2, 2016, they had their first kiss at a friend’s birthday party. And on Dec. 31, 2016, right before the ball dropped at midnight, he asked her, “Will you be my girlfriend?” at Troy Liquor Bar in New York. At the first minute of the new year, she responded, “Of course.”

They moved in together in an apartment in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, in March 2020. Currently, they are staying in Mount Vernon, N.Y., with Mr. Thompson’s family.

Both value community and the celebration of Black culture, and in January 2020, they started a group called the Legacy Network. The group consists of eight people — four couples, all of whom are now married — to discuss wellness, social justice and entrepreneurship.

In April 2021, the group had a summit at an Airbnb in Danbury, Conn., where the members spoke about their goals and their vision for the future.
